Spring Forward For Daylight Saving Time This Weekend; Check Your Smoke Detectors, Too

Daylight Saving Time begins again this weekend, at 2am on Sunday, March 13, so before you go to bed on Saturday night, remember to change your clocks!

Springing forward in time means we lose an hour of sleep, but at least the next day is Sunday, and this also means our days begin to get some “extra” daylight as spring and summer approaches.

Another reminder: take this opportunity to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, so remember to grab some batteries while you’re out and about in the next couple days. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind, as well, courtesy of National Grid:

And more tips:

  • Inspect fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
  • If you smell gas, get out of the house and do not light a match or cigarette, or turn on — or off! — flashlights or stoves. Once you’re safe, call 911 or National Grid at 718-643-4050 for Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island and 1-800-490-0045 for Long Island/Rockaway Peninsula right away.
  • If you’re doing home renovation that requires digging or excavation, call 8-1-1 between 2-10 days beforehand so the utility companies can come FOR FREE and mark the approximate locations of their lines so you and contractors can avoid it.
