South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: September 3 – 7

Welcome to September! If you’re hanging around the Slope this weekend and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from gypsy swing and Smorgasburg, to zoot suits and barbecues. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:

Fresh Air Yoga
When: Thursday, September 3, 7pm
Where: Long Meadow, Prospect Park
What: Get your yoga on in the Park with a free open-level outdoor class every Thursday night. This week, the class is taught by Kate Reil, Bend & Bloom Yoga.
How much: Free.

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, September 3, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Slap on that thinking cap and tackle a few rounds of trivia over at Supercollider. Big prizes and bragging rights await the winner.
How much: No cover.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, September 4, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, September 4, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Start working on your Charleston, because it’s all about zoot suits and flappers, as we celebrate the 1920s at this week’s Dreamland Roller Disco. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Transforming Food
When: Saturdays & Sundays in September, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Roll up your sleeves and learn all about cooking the old fashioned way. Families can look forward to making popcorn with fresh herb butter, apple pies on a rotating basis, churning butter, grinding corn, and pealing apples.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Early Morning Bird Walk: Fall Migration
When: Sunday, September 6, 8-9am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Spend a beautiful morning with our park’s fine feathered friends. This month’s walk, led by the Brooklyn Bird Club, will be on the lookout for Prospect Park residents that are headed south for the winter.
How much: Free.

Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, September 6, 11am-4pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: Even if you’re lighting up those barbecues for Labor Day weekend, be sure to leave room for the gastronomical delights waiting for you at the Prospect Park Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out.

Stephane Wrembel
When: Sunday, September 6, 9pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: French guitarist Stephane Wrembel, who Rolling Stone calls “a revelation,” brings a little gypsy swing to the Barbes stage on Sunday. You won’t want to miss it.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

Labor Day BBQ
When: Monday, September 7, 3pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue
What: Don’t have a backyard of your own to celebrate Labor Day? Head over to Freddy’s! The grill fires up at 3pm, so come with goodies of your own to toss on the barbie, or eat what they’ve got!
How much: Free.
