South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: September 25-28


Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from a storytelling event, to a children’s book signing with crafts, to a web horror series screening, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:

Free Public Rowing
When: Thursday, September 25, 4-7pm
Where: Boat ramp on Well House Drive, Prospect Park
What: It’s you’re last chance to take the kids for a boat ride around the Prospect Park Lake this season! The Prospect Park Alliance and the Village Community Boathouse are teaming up to make rowing accessible to all on select dates this summer, so paddle on over.
How much: Free!

Reveal: A Storytelling Event
When: Thursday, September 25, 8:30pm
Where: The Monro Pub, 481 5th Avenue
What: Anyone will be welcome to come share — or listen to — a story. Nervous? Beer can help with that!
How much: Free.

Children’s Book Reading & Signing: Tyler The Fish Saves Lake Erie
When: Friday, September 26, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm
Where: A Shoe Grows in Brooklyn, 419 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: Award-winning children’s author Meaghan Fisher will be reading and signing her new book, Tyler the Fish Saves Lake Erie. After the readings they’ll be doing some fall-themed arts and crafts.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, September 26, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Book Donation Drop-Off
When: Saturday, September 27, 10am-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: The Friends of Park Slope Library will be accepting donations for its fall fundraising sale at the library (coming up on October 25). Bring gently used books of all genres, plus they’ll accept CDs and DVDs.

History In Your Hands: Hearth Cooking
When: Saturdays & Sundays in September, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Roll up your sleeves and explore cooking the old fashioned way. Families can look forward to making popcorn with fresh herb butter, apple pies on a rotating basis, churning butter, grinding corn, and pealing apples.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Screening: The Outer Boroughs
When: Saturday, September 27, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Check out a new episode of the horror web series, which is about strange supernatural happenings in Queens and Brooklyn. Stick around after the screening to see multi-instrumentalist John Banrock at 9pm, and then at midnight it’s Tomato’s School of Rock band.
How much: Free.

Hip Tot Family Day
When: Sunday, September 28, 12-3pm
Where: Greenwood Park, 555 7th Avenue at 19th Street
What: Bring the kids and grab a drink while you enjoy music by The Trummytones, an appearance by a clown from the Big Apple Circus, free crafts from Barking Cat Studios, and more.
How much: Free.

Harvest Festival
When: Sunday, September 28, 1-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Celebrate this year’s harvest the same way Brooklynites did centuries ago by harvesting, cooking, and eating potatoes that were planted in the garden outside of the Lefferts Historic House back in May. And oh yes, there will be potato sack races!
How much: $3 suggested donation.
