South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: September 24-27
Welcome to the weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from free skating and art, to 80s dance hits and sunset yoga. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:
Free Skating For Kids At Lakeside
When: Thursday, September 24, 3-6pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: What’s better than skating at LeFrak Center? Free skating at LeFrak Center! Thursdays this fall, kids ages 3-12 are invited to the rink for an afternoon of skating. Note that while there is no admission fee, skate rentals will still cost $6 (plus tax). If you have you’re own wheels, though, you’re good to go!

Sunset Yoga
When: Thursday, September 24, 7-8pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Ease on through to the weekend with a glorious sunset yoga session beside Prospect Park Lake, led by Abhaya Yoga. Registration begins at 6:30pm. Please bring your own mat, and note that children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, September 25, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, September 25, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Get ready to “pump up the jam” at Lakeside this Friday, where they’ll be rocking an incredible ’80s pajama party. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Transforming Food
When: Saturdays & Sundays in September, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Roll up your sleeves and learn all about cooking the old fashioned way. Families can look forward to making popcorn with fresh herb butter, apple pies on a rotating basis, churning butter, grinding corn, and pealing apples.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Excelsior Grand Opening Party
When: Saturday, September 26, 8pm – 4am
Where: Excelsior, 563 5th Avenue, between 15th and 16th Streets
What: Excelsior has been open since August, but the official grand opening of their new 5th Avenue location is set for this Saturday. Look for food specials, drink specials, DJs, and guest performances. Congratulations, Excelsior!
How much: No cover.
Play Lab
When: Sunday, September 27, 9am-12pm
Where: bodyLITERATE Incubator, 112 2nd Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets, studio 5
What: Ready to get creative? Educator Priscilla Shen-Ribeiro leads ages 5+ on a collaborative adventure to make imaginary creatures with boxes and other recycled materials. For more information, or to sign up, email info@thebodyliterate.com.

Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, September 27, 11am-6pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: What’s the best way to end your weekend? Tasting all the gastronomical delights at Prospect Park’s Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out.
