South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 9-12


Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from farmyard races and backyard jamborees to Thriller on wheels and book collections, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:

Reveal: A Storytelling Event
When: Thursday, October 9, 8:30pm
Where: The Monro Pub, 481 5th Avenue
What: Anyone will be welcome to come share — or listen to — a story. Nervous? Beer can help with that!
How much: Free.

Meditation For Spanish Speakers
When: Thursday, October 9, 6-7:45pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Is the weight of a long work week getting you down? Make your way to the library Thursday evening for a little group meditation.
How much: Free

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, October 10, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, October 10, 8pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Time to bust out your best moonwalk and join neighbors for this week’s roller disco Thriller theme (you’re singing the song now, aren’t you?) featuring “carnival arts performers, contests, giveaways, specialty menu selections from Bluestone Café, Brooklyn Brewery seasonal beers and more.” Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older.
How much: $15 (includes admission and skate rental).

Book Donation Drop-Off
When: Saturday, October 11, 10am-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: The Friends of Park Slope Library will be accepting donations for its fall fundraising sale at the library (coming up on October 25). Bring gently used books of all genres, plus they’ll accept CDs and DVDs.

Backyard Jamboree
When: Saturday, October 11, 11am-5pmm
Where: Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: Ready for tasty vittles, down-home music, and fun? Head to Lakeside this Saturday for the park’s backyard jamboree. The event, geared towards folks of all ages, will feature a southern-style barbecue, country line dancing, arts and crafts, face painting, a pumpkin patch, and more.
How much: Tickets, which can be purchased here, range from $15 to $86 for a family 4-pack.

Race Around The Farmyard
When: Saturdays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Nothing says fall like fun at Lefferts Historic House! Families are invited to get moving this month with potato sack races, spoon races, stilts, and other old fashioned games that are sure to bring a smile to the faces of participants both young and old.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Storytelling With Tammy Hall
When: Sunday, October 12, 2-3pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Join storyteller and musician Tammy Hall this Sunday under the big tree at Lefferts House, as she delights families with tales from around the world.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Science Fiction Sunday
When: Sunday, October 12, 8pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Watch two rare films you won’t see anywhere else — the 1980 musical comedy Forbidden Zone, and Werner Herzog’s 1978 masterpiece Nosferatu the Vampyre. Plus, take $1 off all draughts and $2 off all items on their new food menu!
How much: Free.
