South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 23-26
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from ukuleles to Halloween in the park, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:
Ukulele Night
When: Thursday, October 23, 7:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s time for Freddy’s monthly uke jam. Host Katie Down (aka Genevieve of The Ukuladies) welcomes any and all ukulele players to “join, play and sing in the atmosphere of friends singing songs, sharing playing tips, and generally having fun with the most friendly instrument in world!”
How much: Free.
Migguel Anggelo
When: Thursday, October 23, 8pm
Where: Barbès, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: The Brooklyn-based, Venezuelan-born singer and storyteller, makes his debut at Barbès, performing original works from his forthcoming album, La Casa Azul, scheduled for release in January 2015.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, October 24, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Friends Book Sale
When: Saturday, October 25, 10:30am-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: It’s time for the Friends of Park Slope Library book sale. Come out to pick up some new favorites, and help support improvement and enhancements at our local branch.
Boo at the Zoo
Where: Prospect Park Zoo
When: Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 11am-4pm
What: Learn about bats, watch baboons smash pumpkins, take a trip through the spooky barn, join a costume parade, and enjoy face painting, craft making, and more. Must pay zoo admission, no additional cost for Halloween activities.
Halloween Food Truck Rally
When: Saturday, October 25, 11:30am-4:30pm
Where: Center Drive
What: More than a dozen food truck are back with sweet and savory treats to help feed the folks at this year’s Haunted Walk & Carnival.
Halloween Haunted Walk & Carnival
When: Saturday, October 25, 12-3pm
Where: Nethermead, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a frightful adventure in the park? Ghouls and goblins lurk behind the trees, ready to provide a silly scare at the Prospect Park Alliance’s annual Haunted Walk. Note that young children should be accompanied by an adult. After the Haunted Walk, head over to the Halloween Carnival, which features fun games for children, pony rides, and more.
How much: Free.
Halloween Carousel
When: Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 12-5pm
Where: Children’s Corner, Prospect Park
What: Take a spin on the Haunted Carousel. Creepy bats, scary cats, and spooky spiders will watch you ride to the sounds of chilling Halloween music as the classics play on the Wurlitzer
How much: $2 per ride.
Race Around The Farmyard
When: Saturdays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Nothing says fall like fun at Lefferts Historic House! Families are invited to get moving this month with potato sack races, spoon races, stilts, and other old fashioned games that are sure to bring a smile to the faces of participants both young and old.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Halloween Party/Fundraiser To Cure Huntington’s Disease
When: Saturday, October 25, 6pm-1am
Where: Leathernecks Tattoo, 667a 5th Avenue
What: In addition to the usual costume contest, 50/50 raffle, and lots of booze, they’ll be raffling off chances to win a free tattoo with any artist in the shop!
How much: $15 suggested donation.
Halloween Hullabaloo
When: Sunday, October 26, 12-3pm
Where: Greenwood Park, 555 7th Avenue
What: Get the whole family into the spirit of Halloween at Hip Tot Family Day’s Halloween Hullabaloo. Enjoy free family fun with sing-alongs, story time, crafts, freebies, and a Halloween costume parade. Plus, there will be clowns!
How much: Free.
Howl-O-Ween Costume Bash For Dogs
When: Sunday, October 26, 2-4pm
Where: Long Meadow in Prospect Park, near the Grand Army Plaza entrance
What: Go Fetch Run and Calm Energy Dog Training will be hosting the second annual event, with awards for the best costumes and prizes.
How much: $10 costume contest registration, which will benefit local animal rescue groups.
Walking Dead & Killer Klowns From Outer Space
When: Sunday, October 26, 8pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue near 17th Street
What: Watch the new episode of the Walking Dead, then stick around for a screening of the 1988 film about alien clowns who invade a small town. Plus, enjoy $1 off draught beers and $2 items on their new food menu.
How much: Free.
