South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: November 13-16
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from beer, opera, and karaoke, to a little Gypsy Swing, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:
Classical Guitar Recital With Carlos Pavan
When: Thursday, November 13, 6:30-7:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 6th Avenue and 9th Street
What: Join neighbors for an evening of guitar music from Argentina and South America, performed by guitarist and composer Carlos Pavan.
How much: Free.
Home Brewed Opera And Liveband Karaoke With The Dirty Sexy Ensemble
When: Thursday, November 13, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 16th and 17th Streets
What: Get those viking helmets and beer steins ready, because the brilliantly talented Opera on Tap returns to Freddy’s Thursday night. Even if you don’t think opera is your cup of tea, go. There’s a good chance these guys will change your mind. Afterward, stick around for Liveband Karaoke, featuring 5th Avenue BID’s Mark Caserta on guitar for the Dirty Sexy Ensemble.
How much: No cover.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, November 14, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Local Tree Care
When: Saturday, November 15, 1-3pm
Where: New Voices Middle School, 330 18th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues
What: Help out on this student-led greening event where neighbors can join in on sprucing up tree beds, preparing them for winter, and planting daffodil bulbs. Also lend a hand winterizing the school garden.
How much: Free.
History In Your Hands: Paper Quilting
When: Saturdays and Sundays in November, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Spend a cozy afternoon at Lefferts Historic House this month making your own paper quilt collage to add to their community patchwork quilt.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Stephane Wrembel
When: Sunday, November 16, 9pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: French guitarist Stephane Wrembel, who Rolling Stone calls “a revelation,” brings a little Gypsy Swing to the Barbes stage on Sunday. You won’t want to miss it.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
