South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: May 29-June 1


Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from nature on the go to spring festivals, you won’t have to go far for fun! Check out some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Cafe Be’ivrit
When: Thursday, May 29, 6-7:45pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: If you’re looking to brush up on, or even begin to learn Hebrew, join Kings Bay Y for a specialty workshop that will use fun activities to teach neighbors basic Hebrew words.
How much: Free.

Brooklyn Volunteer Fair
When: Thursday, May 29, 6-9pm
Where: Armory YMCA, 15th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues
What: Searching for a way to give back to the community this year? Stop by the Armory Thursday evening for the Brooklyn Volunteer Fair. Dozens of organizations will be on hand, including the Center for Anti-Violence Education,CHiPS, the Prospect Park Zoo, Sean Casey Animal Rescue, Seeds in the Middle, SFX Youth Sports, and many more, with opportunities for individuals, families, seniors, and students.
How much: Free.

Nature On The Go
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 2-3pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Every Thursday and Friday, families can take a walk with members of the Prospect Park Alliance to learn about the park’s flora and fauna. No reservations required, just meet at the Audubon Center.
How much: Free.

Explore & Create: Garden Craft
When: Friday, May 30, 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Although it hasn’t felt like it for the past couple of days, spring is in full bloom, and our friends at the Park Slope Library have put together a garden-themed art project for the kids this Friday. Come on out and get crafty!
How much: Free.

PS 124 Spring Festival
When: Saturday, May 31, 11am-3pm
Where: 13th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenue
What: Party with the gang at PS 124, as they welcome neighbors to their spring festival. 13th Street (between 4th and 5th Avenues) will have fun activities and entertainment for the whole family including bounce houses, mini golf, and cupcake making. Also look for performances from Trummytones, Brooklyn Dance, and Amerikick, as well as a raffle with tons of goodies from area businesses. Best of all, the block will be closed to traffic, so kids are invited to bring their scooters and bikes. For more information, visit the PS 124 Facebook page.

History In Your Hands: Fleece Fun
When: Saturday, May 31, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Ever wondered how wool was used on a Colonial farm? It’s the last weekend for Fleece Fun at Lefferts House. Come brush wool with carding paddles, spin yarn using a drop spindle, and even make a felt ball to take home with you. Ewe won’t want to miss it!
How much: $3 suggested donation

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, June 1, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park this weekend — the food trucks are back!

Count On The Subway With Paul DeBois Jacobs, Jennifer Swender, & Dan Yaccarino
When: Sunday, June 1, 11:30am-12pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: It’s time for story time at Powerhouse on 8th. This week, join the authors and illustrators of Count On The Subway, a counting adventure through the NYC subway system. Recommended for children ages 3 to 7.

Gluten-Free Eat Up
When: Sunday, June 1, 1-6pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Discover how tasty gluten-free can be at Freddy’s this weekend, as neighbor Deb Goldstein hosts her monthly Gluten-Free Eat Up, featuring goodies like grilled cheese sandwiches, hand-pies, sauces, pasta, vegan kimchee, and more.
How much: Free admission.
