South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: May 1-4


From Hebrew and Pilates to Star Wars and a climate haiku competition, South Slope is the place to be this weekend. Check out some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Cafe Be’ivrit
When: Thursday, May 1, 6pm to 7:45pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: If you’re looking to brush up on, or even begin to learn Hebrew, join Kings Bay Y for a specialty workshop that will use fun activities to teach neighbors basic Hebrew words.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Pilates
When: Friday, May 2, 12pm to 1pm
Where: Prospect Park Audubon Center
What: Shape up and have fun in Prospect Park. This introductory class to the Pilates method utilizes conditioning exercises that help to create length in the body, and improve flexibility and strength. The class is open to adults and seniors. No registration is required, but they do ask that you bring your own mat.
How much: Free.

Family Movie And Craft Day At Park Slope Library
When: Friday, May 2, 3:30pm to 5:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: It’s all about the supers at this week’s Park Slope Library family movie. Bring the kids down for a showing of Disney’s Incredibles, and stick around afterward for a craft activity.
How much: Free.

Sing-Along With Miss Nina
When: Friday, May 2, 4pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: It’s time for music, dance and story time fun at Powerhouse on 8th.  Join Miss Nina for an afternoon sing-along, “book songs” based on Bill Martin Jr.’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See, Jane Yolen’s How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, and more. Geared toward children ages 0-4.

Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, May 3, 7am to 9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: It’s the first Saturday of the month, which can only mean one thing…Coffee Bark with FIDO. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.

Prospect Park Craft Fair
When: Saturday, May 3, 10am-5pm
Where: Bartel Pritchard Lot, 15th Street and PPW, Prospect Park
What: Find a cool Mother’s Day gift from local artists and crafts people, socialize, and support Windsor Terrace elementary school PS 154 – part of the proceeds raised from the event are donated to help support the arts and enrichment programs at the school.
How much: Free!

History In Your Hands: Fleece Fun
When: Saturday and Sundays through May 31, 2pm to 4pm
Where: Prospect Park Lefferts Historic House
What: Ever wondered how wool was used on a Colonial farm? Visit Lefferts House weekends in May to brush wool with carding paddles, spin yarn using a drop spindle, and even make a felt ball to take home with you. Ewe won’t want to miss it!
How much: $3 suggested donation

Let The Wookiee Win: A Star Wars Quiz
When: Sunday, May 4, 7pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: If you’ve spent the past couple of days geeking out over the official Star Wars: Episode VII cast announcement, there’s only one place you need to be on Sunday. The folks from Geeks Who Drink are once again bringing their nerdy trivia to Supercollider, and this time, it’s all about those who use and abuse the force. The quiz will focus on the original trilogy, but there will be one question on the holiday special, which you can watch here. Teams are limited to six players, and the more people that come, the larger the prize pot, so come one, come all. May the Fourth be with you.
How much: $5 per person

Hot Time For A Cool Planet
When: Sunday, May 4, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Get to know the Green Party’s candidate for governor, Howie Hawkins, at Freddy’s this Sunday. Look for music from Lowlark, Hayride Casualties, and a climate haiku competition.
How much: Free.
