South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: March 19-22

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from trivia and Brazilian blue grass, to classical guitar and Shatner, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, March 19, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue
What: Switch your knit cap (go away, cold weather) for your thinking cap, as you tackle a few rounds of trivia! Big prizes and bragging rights await the winner.
How much: No cover.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, March 20, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Matuto
When: Friday, March 20, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Take music from the Brazilian Carnaval, mix it with a little Appalachian blue grass, and you have the sounds of Matuto, hitting the Barbes stage on Friday night. Look for Rob Curto on accordion, Clay Ross on guitar, Mike Lavalle on bass, Mazz Swift on violin, Richie Barshay on drum, and Ze Mauricio on Percussion.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation

Neighborhood Guitar Workshop
When: Saturday, March 21, 11am-12pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Interested in playing the guitar? Don’t miss the free workshop this Saturday at the Park Slope Library. Ages 7 and up are welcome to bring acoustic and electric guitars, but please bring your own instrument if possible, as there are only a handful of spares. Fundamentals of guitar playing – proper fingering technique – chords and blues scales will be taught. Space is limited, so be sure to arrive on time.
How much: Free.

Solos, Duets, & Trios With Carlos Pavan
When: Saturday, March 21, 2-3:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 6th Avenue and 9th Street
What: Join neighbors for an afternoon of guitar music from Argentina, blended with classical and jazz, performed by guitarist and composer Carlos Pavan. Also featured in a selection of solos, duets, and trios, are Emily Wespiser on flute, and Damien Kelly on guitar.
How much: Free.

Para//e/s Photography Exhibition Opening
When: Saturday, March 21, 4-6pm
Where: OS Cafe, 535 6th Avenue, between 14th and 15th Streets
What: Meet local photographer Tony Fetters at the opening reception for his new exhibit — and maybe pick up  print to bring home!
How much: Free.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, March 22, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. Obsolete Cinema Presents SHATSHOW III: Sex, Drugs, & Shatner
When: Sunday, March 22, 4pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Show some love to the captain himself, William Shatner, as Obsolete Cinema celebrates their 3rd annual ShatShow. This time around, it’s all about the classics from the ’60s and ’70s, including The Explosive Generation and Go Ask Alice.
How much: No cover.

Stripes
When: Sunday, March 22, 10:30pm
Where: Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: Looking to finish off your weekend with a laugh? You can’t go wrong with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, starring in this Sunday’s Cafe Steinhof movie of the week, Stripes.
How much: Free.
