South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: March 12-15
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from opera with beer and poetry, to Broadway on ice and French swing, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:
Home Brewed Opera: History Edition And Karaoke
When: Thursday, March 12, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Warm up within the cozy confines of Freddy’s, as Home Brewed Opera (a offshoot of Opera on Tap that focuses on contemporary, living composers) takes the stage. Afterward, stick around for karaoke with the Dirty Sexy Ensemble.
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, March 13, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Roots Poetry Series
When: Friday, March 14, 8-10pm
Where: Roots Cafe, 639 5th Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets
What: The monthly poetry series at Roots brings together an impressive lineup on Friday night! Look for readings from Allison Geller, Paige Taggart, Jen Degregorio, and Danniel Schoonebeek.
How much: Free.
Neighborhood Guitar Workshop
When: Saturday, March 14, 11am-12pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Interested in playing the guitar? Don’t miss the free workshop this Saturday at the Park Slope Library. Ages 7 and up are welcome to bring acoustic and electric guitars, but please bring your own instrument if possible, as there are only a handful of spares. Fundamentals of guitar playing – proper fingering technique – chords and blues scales will be taught. Space is limited, so be sure to arrive on time.

Winter Broadway
When: Saturday, March 14, 12pm
Where: Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: Broadway tunes are headed to Lakeside this weekend! Strap on your skates, and glide around the rink to the soundtracks of Broadway hits like A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder and Honeymoon in Vegas. There will also be ticket giveaways, so be sure to stop by.
How much: $8 skating admission/$6 skate rental
Teen Tech Time
When: Saturday, March 14, 1-3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: If your teen needs a little “me” time, send them down to the Park Slope Library, where they’re invited to spend a couple of hours playing PlayStation or Wii with friends in the auditorium.
How much: Free.
Les Chauds Lapins
When: Saturday, March 14, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Travel back to the days of swing, as Les Chauds Lapins (The Hot Rabbits) play rearranged French classics from the ’30s and ’40s.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation
Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, March 15, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. Three Kings
When: Sunday, March 15, 10:30pm
Where: Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: Cafe Steinhof continues their month of military movies on Sunday with Three Kings, starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube.
How much: Free.
