South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: June 11-14
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from Celebrate Brooklyn and Queen, to podcasts and Brooklyn Pride, you won’t have to go far for fun. Below are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood.

How To Be A Woman: Solo Show And Interactive Workshop For Teenage Girls And Their Mothers With Heather Harpham
When: Thursday, June 11, 6-7:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join writer and performer Heather Harpham at the Park Slope Library Thursday for an interactive performance workshop that “makes women’s historical, contemporary, and evolving social roles come to life.” All adults are welcome, especially mothers and their teenage daughters.

Celebrate Brooklyn: Krosfyah
When: Thursday, June 11, 7:30-10:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Barbados’ legendary Krosfyah “plays speedy, exhilarating soca, calypso’s uptempo party-music descendant,” with irresistible energy.
How much: Free!
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, June 12, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Celebrate Brooklyn!: Esperanza Spalding
When: Friday, June 12, 7:30-10:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: The captivating bassist and singer Esperanza Spaulding’s “sprawling collage of jazz fusion, Brazilian, and even a touch of hip-hop” has earned her critical acclaim, universal love, and four GRAMMYs—including Best New Artist in 2011, making her the first ever jazz artist in the category.
How much: Free!
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, June 12, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you have mud on your face (you big disgrace), the only place you need to be this Friday is Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about Queen. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Roots Poetry Series
When: Friday, June 12, 8-10pm
Where: Roots Cafe, 639 5th Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets
What: The monthly poetry series at Roots brings together an impressive lineup on Friday night! Expect readings from Suzanne Highland, Richard Quigley, Emily Skillings, and Nina Pruro. Beer and wine will be available for cash donations, and (of course) there will be Roots coffee and treats.
How much: Free.
Brooklyn Pride Festival
When: Saturday, June 13, 11am-5pm
Where: 5th Avenue, between 3rd and 9th Streets
What: It’s going to be a day filled with food, music, bounce houses, and more on 5th Avenue, as Brooklyn shows its love for the city’s LGBT community.
How much: Free.
History In Your Hands: Flax To Linen
When: Saturdays and Sundays in June, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Did you know that Lefferts House has a flax crop? This month, the whole family is invited to come and give the tools used to process flax fibers into linen cloth a try. Kids can also sew a small linen pouch to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation
Celebrate Brooklyn!: Lucius
When: Saturday, June 13, 7:30-10:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Lucius traffics in “seemingly impossible harmonies with flawless grace” and “brings delicate beauty to even the most bombastic moments.” This all-Brooklyn triple bill finds them sharing the stage with the maverick experimentalist Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic and the enchanting indie folk outfit Pavo Pavo.

Brooklyn Pride Twilight Parade
When: Saturday, June 13, 7:30pm
Where: 5th Avenue and Lincoln Place to 5th Avenue and 9th Street
What: Cap off your fantastic day at the fifth avenue festival with a parade!. This year’s theme is “in unity there is strength,” so grab your rainbow flag, and join neighbors in showing the world our BROOKLYN PRIDE.
How much: Free.
Hip Tot at Lakeside
When: Sunday, June 14, 11am
Where: LeFrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: The whole family will be jammin’ to the Reggae sounds of Father Goose, along with story time, crafts, giveaways, and community.
How much: Free!
Us & Them
When: Sunday, June 14, 5pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Peabody award-winning public radio producer Trey Kay stops by Barbes on Sunday to give guests a sneak peek at the nest episode of Us & Them, his podcast that “tells stories from the fault lines that separate Americans.”
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation
