South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: July 9-12
Our hot and sunny weekend is almost here! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from outdoor yoga and concerts, to chess and Coffee Bark. Check out some of our favorite events from around the area:
Fresh Air Yoga
When: Thursday, July 9, 7pm
Where: Long Meadow, Prospect Park
What: Get your yoga on in the Park with a free open-level outdoor class every Thursday night. This week, the class is taught by Cari Friedman from Bend & Bloom Yoga.
How much: Free.
Celebrate Brooklyn!: Punch Brothers
When: Thursday, July 9, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Don’t let a damp forecast keep you from a night of bluegrass at this Thursday’s Celebrate Brooklyn! The “virtuosic” quintet, Punch Brothers, will be joined by Brooklyn newbie Sarah Jarosz. You won’t want to miss it!

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, July 10, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Chess Club For All Ages
When: Friday, July 10, 3-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Families are invited to play chess in the auditorium of the Park Slope library this summer. All skill levels are welcome, so whether your a newbie or a pro, come get your game on!
How much: Free.
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, July 10, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you’re hungry like a wolf, the only place you need to be this Friday is Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about Duran Duran and New Wave. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Celebrate Brooklyn!: Latin Alternative Music Conference
When: Friday, July 10, 7pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Unfortunately, Bajofondo had to cancel their scheduled Celebrate Brooklyn! appearance, but the annual Latin Alternative Music Conference is going full steam ahead with performances by Mexican techno-funk rockers, Kinky; the Chilean indie-pop of Astro; and the ska-infused rock of Los Auténticos Decadentes.
How much: Free.
Mamie & Her Business
When: Friday, July 10, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: They’re kicking it old school with the blues on Friday night at Barbes, when the talented Mamie Minch hits the stage.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, July 11, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: Fido’s popular Coffee Bark returns to Prospect Park on Saturday. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.
Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, July 11 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.
Macy’s Family Fishing And Bird Watching Clinic
When: Saturdays & Sundays in July, 12-6pm
Where: North End of Esplanade, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn all about aquatic ecology, fishing safety, and how to collect bait. Afterward, from 4:30-6pm, families are invited to go bird watching. Note that this event is first come, first serve, so be sure to arrive early.
How much: Free.
Fun On The Farm
When: Saturdays and Sundays in July, 2-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Visitors of all ages can come help the Lefferts staff take care of the potato plot, herb gardens, and berry patches by pulling weeds and helping to water. Bring a hat and a bottle of water and they will provide the tools and gloves.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Celebrate Brooklyn!: The New Pornographers
When: Saturday, July 11, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: It’s power-pop and indie-rock at Saturday’s Celebrate Brooklyn! 10 years after their first bandshell performance, The New Pornographers returns, along with alt-folk iconoclasts, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down.
How much: Free.
Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, July 12, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday, and nosh on goodies from some of the city’s best food trucks.
Back Room Brawl
When: Sunday, July 12, 7pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Every second Sunday of the month, improv takes over the back room at Freddy’s. Hosted by Jackson Helms.
