South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: July 23-26

Another glorious summer weekend is almost here! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from Peter Pan and Captain Hook, to concerts and a little 5th Avenue Shakespeare. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:

Fresh Air Yoga
When: Thursday, July 23, 7pm
Where: Long Meadow, Prospect Park
What: Get your yoga on in the Park with a free open-level outdoor class every Thursday night. This week, the class is taught by Lindsay Ashmun from Bend & Bloom Yoga.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, July 24, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Chess Club For All Ages
When: Friday, July 24, 3-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Families are invited to play chess in the auditorium of the Park Slope library this summer. All skill levels are welcome, so whether your a newbie or a pro, come get your game on!
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, July 24, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: As the early part of this week proved, July and August weather in NYC definitely makes for a ‘Cruel Summer,’ but our friends at Dreamland Roller Disco are embracing the heat with a celebration of ’80s pop hits on Friday night. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Jason Isbell
When: Friday, July 24, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Are you a little bit country? Don’t miss Jason Isbell, who The Wall Street Journal says “performs with an intensity that connects the listener to the deep and genuine emotions that inspire his work,” at the Prospect Park Bandshell on Friday night,
How much: Free.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, July 25 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.

Macy’s Family Fishing And Bird Watching Clinic
When: Saturdays & Sundays in July, 12-6pm
Where: North End of Esplanade, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn all about aquatic ecology, fishing safety, and how to collect bait. Afterward, from 4:30-6pm, families are invited to go bird watching. Note that this event is first come, first serve, so be sure to arrive early.
How much: Free.

Fun On The Farm
When: Saturdays and Sundays in July, 2-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Visitors of all ages can come help the Lefferts staff take care of the potato plot, herb gardens, and berry patches by pulling weeds and helping to water. Bring a hat and a bottle of water and they will provide the tools and gloves.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Peter Pan and the Pirates
When: Saturday, July 25, 3 and 4pm
Where: Zucker Natural Exploration Area, Prospect Park
What: Fly off to Neverland with the family this Saturday, as Peter Pan, with the help of Princess Tiger Lilly and the Lost Boys, take on Captain Hook, in an immersive dance theatre production at Prospect Park’s Zucker Natural Exploration Area. For more information, visit the Eva Dean Dance website.

South Slope Summer Stroll
When: Saturday, July 25, 5-9pm
Where: 5th Avenue, between 12th and 18th Streets
What: South Slope Summer Stroll is back! Once again, the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID will transform busy Fifth Avenue into a giant block party, with live music, a climbing wall, bounce houses, vintage cars, fun and games from Puppetry Arts, face painting, food, drinks, and best of all, FREE SHAKESPEARE. Don’t miss South Brooklyn Shakespeare’s performance of Much Ado About Nothing, scheduled for 6:30pm on 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Sylvan Esso
When: Saturday, July 25, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: If you’re looking for “endlessly elastic and three-dimensional songs that conjure up dreamlike conflations of sen­suality and sexual depravity, homesickness and wanderlust, nostalgia and immediacy,” the only place you need be on Saturday night is Celebrate Brooklyn, where Sylvan Esso is scheduled to take the stage at 7:30pm.

Obsolete Cinema Presents: Gamer’s Paradise
When: Sunday, July 26, 4pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Move over, Xbox, because Obsolete Cinema is bringing together two of the greatest arcade movies in the history of ever. Don’t miss 1982’s “Tron,” and 1984’s “The Last Starfighter.”
How much: No cover.
