South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: July 16-19
Our hot and sunny weekend is almost here! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from the popular South Slope Summer Stroll and outdoor yoga, to concerts and food trucks. Check out some of our favorite events from around the area:
Fresh Air Yoga
When: Thursday, July 16, 7pm
Where: Long Meadow, Prospect Park
What: Get your yoga on in the Park with a free open-level outdoor class every Thursday night. This week, the class is taught by Be Shakti from Brooklyn Yoga Project.
How much: Free.
Celebrate Brooklyn!: Vieux Farka Touré
When: Thursday, July 16, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: We’re looking at a gorgeous night for this Thursday’s Celebrate Brooklyn! Vieux Farka Touré, the “heir apparent to the African guitar throne,” takes the stage, along with a little desert blues from Tamikrest.
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, July 17, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Chess Club For All Ages
When: Friday, July 17, 3-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Families are invited to play chess in the auditorium of the Park Slope library this summer. All skill levels are welcome, so whether your a newbie or a pro, come get your game on!
How much: Free.
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, July 17, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you’re ready to get physical, the only place you need to be this Friday is Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about ’80s workout gear. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Celebrate Brooklyn!: The Son Of The Shiek & Ghost Train Orchestra
When: Friday, July 17, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Spend the evening with Rudolf Valentino, as Celebrate Brooklyn! presents his silent film, Son of the Shiek. The night starts off with the lively Ghost Train Orchestra, playing Harlem and Chicago jazz of the ’20s. Afterward, Alloy Orchestra will perform alongside the film with a live score.
How much: Free.
Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, July 18 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.
Macy’s Family Fishing And Bird Watching Clinic
When: Saturdays & Sundays in July, 12-6pm
Where: North End of Esplanade, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn all about aquatic ecology, fishing safety, and how to collect bait. Afterward, from 4:30-6pm, families are invited to go bird watching. Note that this event is first come, first serve, so be sure to arrive early.
How much: Free.
Fun On The Farm
When: Saturdays and Sundays in July, 2-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Visitors of all ages can come help the Lefferts staff take care of the potato plot, herb gardens, and berry patches by pulling weeds and helping to water. Bring a hat and a bottle of water and they will provide the tools and gloves.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
South Slope Summer Stroll
When: Saturday, July 18, 5-9pm
Where: 5th Avenue, between 12th and 18th Streets
What: South Slope Summer Stroll is back! Once again, the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID will transform busy Fifth Avenue into a giant block party, with live music, a climbing wall, bounce houses, vintage cars, a doggy fashion show at Freddy’s, fun and games from Puppetry Arts, face painting, food, drinks, mini golf, and more.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Rhiannon Giddens
When: Saturday, July 18, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Coming off her solo debut, Tomorrow Is My Turn, Rhiannon Giddens is “so hot she’s in danger of melting the Bandshell stage.” How can you miss that? It’s all Americana and soul at Celebrate Brooklyn! Saturday. Don’t miss it.

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, July 19, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday, and nosh on goodies from some of the city’s best food trucks.
Uri Sharlin’s DogCat Ensemble
When: Sunday, July 19, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Go on a “narrated musical journey through dream-like images and landscapes in a sizzling presentation of new and original compositions blending jazz and classical influences with Balkan rhythms, Arabic modes and Brazilian harmonies,” as Uri Sharlin and his ensemble take the Barbes stage on Sunday night.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
