South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: January 9-12

From beer and opera to Blades of Glory, South Slope is definitely the place to be this weekend. Check out some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Opera On Tap
When: Thursday, January 9, 9pm to 11pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Get those viking helmets and beer steins ready, because the brilliantly talented Opera on Tap returns to Freddy’s Thursday night. Even if you don’t think opera is your cup of tea, go. There’s a good chance these guys will change your mind.
How much: Free!

Sing-Along With Miss Nina
When: Friday, January 10, 4pm to 4:30pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: It’s time for music, dance and story time fun at Powerhouse on 8th.  Join Miss Nina for an afternoon sing-along, “book songs” based on Bill Martin Jr.’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See, Jane Yolen’s How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, and more. Geared toward children ages 0-4.

Mulchfest
When: Saturday, January 11 and Sunday, January 12, 10am to 2pm
Where: Prospect Park, 3rd Street and Prospect Park West
What: If you’re still hanging on to your Christmas tree, bring it up to Prospect Park this weekend for Mulchfest. Mulch will be used for ground cover in the park, and you’ll even be able to bring a bag home for your own yard or garden (if you have a yard or garden). Be sure to remove all decorations before the tree hits the chipper!
How much: Free!

Blades of Glory
When: Sunday, January 12, 10:30pm
Where: Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: We can’t think of a better way to get ready for the Winter Olympics than with Will Farrell in the ice skating classic, Blades of Glory. There’s also popcorn involved…
How much: Free!
