South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: January 29-February 1

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from free alcohol and football, to all star weirdos and the magic of VHS, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Weird Wednesdays (On Thursdays)
When: Thursday, January 29, 7:30-9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Ready to explore some musical weirdness with Terry Dame? This month, it’s an all star blowout featuring “10 + weirdos scattered around the back room of Barbes. Weird duos, trios, four-Os and five-Os, everyone-Os, all playing conducted improvised music on the most fantastic musical inventions.”
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, January 30, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Slope Cellars Tasting: Grand Cru Selections
When: Friday, January 30, 6pm
Where: Slope Cellars, 436 7th Avenue, between 14th and 15th Street
What: You know you’re a fan of free booze. Stop by Slope Cellars on Friday to taste a bit of Ar.Pe.Pe. Rosso di Valtellina, Fattoria di Sammontana Chianti, and Palmina Pinot Grigio.
How much: Free.

Guitar Workshop For Kids & Teens
When: Saturday, January 31, 11am-12pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Is your kiddo interested in playing the guitar? Don’t miss the free workshop this Saturday at the Park Slope Library. Kids are welcome to bring acoustic and electric guitars, but please bring your own instrument if possible, as there are only a handful of spares. Note that the event is for children ages 6-18, and the listing specifically states that it not designed for kids younger than 6.
How much: Free.

Introduction To Bird Watching
When: Saturday, January 31, 12-1:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Audubon Center
What: If the family would like to learn a bit more about the neighborhood’s fair feathered friends, join the Brooklyn Bird Club in Prospect Park this weekend, and discover some of the 250 species of birds that call our park home.
How Much: Free.

Obsolete Cinema Presents: Rewind This!
When: Saturday, January 31, 5-8:45pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Pining for the days when we all had to be kind and rewind? Make your way to Freddy’s on Saturday for a screening of the documentary ‘Rewind This!’. The film chronicles the “rise and revolution of home video and the true believers who still cling to the format.” Filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions after the show.
How much: Free.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, February 1, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. A new card will be added to the website each month through April.

Super Bowl At Supercollider
When: Sunday, February 1, 4pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Are you ready for some football? The gang at Supercollider will have free pizza from Peppino’s and Pauline & Sharon as you cheer for your favorite team. The game will be projected on the big screen, and there is no cover.
How much: Free.

Super Bowl At Skylark
When: Sunday, February 1, 6pm
Where: Skylark, 477 5th Avenue and 11th Street
What: Our neighbors at Skylark have drink specials, sandwiches, and pretzels at the ready for the big game.
How much: Free.

Super Bowl At Prospect Bar And Grill
When: Sunday, February 1, 6pm
Where: Prospect, 545 5th Avenue, between 14th and 15th Street
What: Down the road at Prospect, they’ll have wings, sliders, and $4 draft beers. Best of all, you can reserve a table by calling 347-599-1087.
