South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: December 26-29

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from heartbreak and glam rock, to birds and Xanadu, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Monday:

Winter Break In Prospect Park
When: Friday, December 26-Thursday, January 1, 1-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Have the kids ever asked how their favorite Prospect Park animals survive during the winter months? The Audubon Nature Center will answer that question and more during the holiday break, through games, science activities, and Naturalist led tours.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Historic Games & Needlework
When: Friday, December 26-Thursday, January 1, 1-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Spend a cozy afternoon at Lefferts Historic House this month making your own 9-man-morris board. Families will also have an opportunity to create a small needlework sampler to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Que Vlo-Ve?
When: Friday, December 26, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Songs of heartbreak, addiction, and sketchy career choices (in case you didn’t get enough of that at your family Christmas dinner) fill Barbes on Friday night, as Que Vlo-Ve takes the stage.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Personality Crisis
When: Friday, December 26, 10pm
Where: Supercollider, 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street
What: Twig the Wonderkid and Friends will “spin glamorous rock n roll and New York gutter punk” at Supercollider on Friday. The event is 21 and up only, so make sure you bring an ID with you.
How much: Free.

Introduction To Birdwatching
When: Saturday, December 27, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Take a tour from the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn about the 250 species of birds that call Prospect Park home.
How much: Free.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, December 28, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. Obsolete Cinema Presents: Winter Wonderland
When: Sunday, December 28, 4pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s a musical double feature! First up, Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck, and Gene Kelly star in the movie that “spawned a thousand neon tights,” Xanadu. Afterward, stick around as Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Nipsey Russell, and Michael Jackson ‘Ease on Down the Road‘ in The Wiz.
How much: Free.

Folk Sing-a-Long With Katy Stone
When: Monday, December 29, 11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring your babies and toddlers to the Park Slope Library on Monday morning, and get folksy with Katy Stone. Note that tickets are required, so be sure to arrive to the library early and secure your spot.
How much: Free.
