South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: August 20 – 23
Ready for another hot summer weekend? If you’re hanging around the Slope and searching for adventure, we’ve got everything from Gotham Cajun and 80s dance hits, to Obsolete Cinema and fishing. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Free Carousel Rides
When: Every Thursday in August, 12-6pm
Where: Carousel, Prospect Park
What: Who doesn’t love a ride on the Prospect Park Carousel?! Every Thursday afternoon throughout the month of August, kids 12 and under are invited to hop on for free. Note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free.
Fresh Air Yoga
When: Thursday, August 20, 7pm
Where: Long Meadow, Prospect Park
What: Get your yoga on in the Park with a free open-level outdoor class every Thursday night. This week, the class is taught by Julie Dohrman, Bend & Bloom Yoga.
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, August 21, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Chess Club For All Ages
When: Friday, July 21, 3-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Families are invited to play chess in the auditorium of the Park Slope library this summer. All skill levels are welcome, so whether your a newbie or a pro, come get your game on!
How much: Free.
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, August 21, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Get ready to walk like an Egyptian, because it’s all about those 80s dance hits at this Friday’s Dreamland Roller Disco. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, August 22, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.
Macy’s Family Fishing And Bird Watching Clinic
When: Saturdays & Sundays in August, 12-6pm
Where: North End of Esplanade, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn all about aquatic ecology, fishing safety, and how to collect bait. Afterward, from 4:30-6pm, families are invited to go bird watching. Note that this event is first come, first serve, so be sure to arrive early.
How much: Free.
Historic Games
When: Saturdays and Sundays in August, 2-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Have the kids ever played 9-Man Morris? Well, they’ll learn how by making their own board, which they can take home to continue playing. That’s not all! Look for checkers, historic hoop games, and stilts.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
The Ramshackle
When: Saturday, August 22, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street
What: Don’t miss a brilliant mix of “gotham cajun, zydeco, and roots,” as The Ramshackle takes the Barbes stage on Saturday night.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
Obsolete Cinema Presents: Wheel Genius
When: Sunday, August 23, 4pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: This month, it’s a “a wacky VHS salute to that defining American accessory – the automobile,” when Obsolete Cinema presents Moving Violations, and Used Cars over at Freddy’s.
How much: No cover.
