South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: April 23-26

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from ukuleles and Arbor Day, to classical cocktails and art receptions, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Ukulele Night
When: Thursday, April 23, 7pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s time for Freddy’s monthly uke jam. Host Katie Down (aka Genevieve of The Ukuladies) welcomes any and all ukulele players to “join, play and sing in the atmosphere of friends singing songs, sharing playing tips, and generally having fun with the most friendly instrument in world!” As an added bonus, the incredible Pre-War Ponies will take the stage at 9:30pm.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, April 24, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Arbor Day In Prospect Park
When: Friday, April 24, 1-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Celebrate the gorgeous trees of Prospect Park at the Audubon Center this Friday. Families will enjoy crafts (1-2pm), a chance to help spread mulch around trees (2-3pm), and a lesson in tree identification (3-4pm).
How much: Free.

Live Greek Music
When: Friday, April 24, 7-11pm
Where: Pitas and Sticks, 321 9th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues
What: What’s better than delicious pitas and sticks? Live music to accompany your meal! Sfera Entertainment is set to perform at the restaurant from 7pm to 11pm.
How much: Free.

Spring Sprouts
When: Saturdays and Sundays through April, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: It’s time for spring sprouts at Lefferts Historic House. Kids are invited to make a pot out of newspaper, fill it with soil, and plant an herb seed to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Musical Cocktails
When: Saturday, April 25, 3:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: It’s classical recitals with a twist at Barbes on Saturday afternoon. Cozy up with a cocktail as violinists David Gale and Audrey Lo fill the air with Bach, Beach, Beethoven, Paganini, Sivori, Wieniawski.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, April 26, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. A new card will be added to the website each month through April.
How much: Free with zoo admission.

Closing Reception For “Recalculating…”
When: Sunday, April 26, 4:40pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Join artist Nancy Lunsford for a casual celebration of her 440 Gallery exhibition, Recalculating…. Look for live bluegrass, good conversation, and a lovely glass of wine.
How Much: Free.
