South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: October 27-30


Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from Halloween-themed trivia to free yoga for kids, the Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:

Tropical Vortex Monday
When: Monday, October 27, 9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Fight the upcoming Polar Vortex with tropical rhythms! This week features DJ K Conan spinning psychedelic cumbia, chicha, vallenato, and more.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

Kids Yoga
When: Tuesday, October 27, 3pm
Where: Jaya Yoga, 1626 8th Avenue at Windsor Place
What: A fun chance for your child to get into yoga. Kids will be introduced to the practice of asana, learning the names of the poses in Sanskrit, singing songs, and having a great time! No experience needed.
How much: Free, but pre-registration is required – email carla@jayayogacenter.com to register.

Halloween Trivia Night
When: Tuesday, October 28, 8pm
Where: Johnny Mack’s, 1114 8th Avenue
What: If you’ve got some trivial knowledge just taking up room in your brain, let it out here for the possibility of free shots and prizes! And since it’s the week for it, expect scary categories, some spooky contests, yummy treats, and maybe a trick or two.
How much: Free.

On The Way Out: Music From NY Underground
When: Tuesday, October 28, 8:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Baritone saxophonist Josh Sinton picked Ava Mendoza on electric guitar asa duet partner to make some adventurous music with for this fun night. They’ll be followed by Jochem Van Dijk and his group JAN at 10pm.
How much: $10 at the door.

Kings Bay Y Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, October 28, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Halloween Storytelling Night: I Put A Spell On You
When: Wednesday, October 29, 7pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: This month’s round of the storytelling night So What Happened Was is themed appropriately for Halloween. Hear stories by Nathaniel Cocca-Bates, Susan Kent, Ginny Leise, Gwen Lawson, and Rachel Lares Jamieson, with host Asher Novek.
How much: No cover.

Shape Up NYC: Dance Fitness
When: Thursday, October 30, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shake your groove thing at the Audubon Center on Thursday and get into shape. This new total-body workout class “uses easy-to-follow dance steps to increase cardiovascular fitness and tone the body.”
How much: Free.
