South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: November 17-20


Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from a taste of the tropics to media mash-ups, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:

Micro Tropical
When: Monday, November 17, 9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Counteract the impending polar vortex with tropical rhythms at Barbes every Monday this. This week, it’s vintage tropical music from around the globe, as the bar welcomes Greenwood Rhythm Coalition and El Combo Chimbita.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

8MEDIA Kitchen Re-Mix & Fundraiser
When: Tuesday, November 18, 6pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Chef Jamie Parry is taking over the Freddy’s kitchen on Tuesday to help raise money for an all-new media mash-up festival from creative geniuses Donald O’Finn, Hooker, and Brother Russell of 8MEDIA. In addition to remix videos galore, look for “killer kielbasa, swarms of shrimp, tots to die for, and rivers of beer from Smutty Nose and Keegan Ales.”
How much: Free.

Kings Bay Y Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, November 19, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes. Recommended for children ages 0-5.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Babies and Books
When: Wednesday, November 19, 1:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 6th Avenue and 9th Street
What: Bring the smallest of Slopers to the Park Slope Library on Wednesday for books, songs and rhymes. Recommended for children ages 0 to 18 months.
How much: Free, but a ticket is required for entry. See the librarian for more details.

Free Rad Jokez
When: Wednesday, November 19, 8:30pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Dustin Sherman hosts the fun, free night of comedy featuring Adam Newman, Matt Koff, Amber Nelson, Misha Han, and Shelly Colman.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Dance Fitness
When: Thursday, November 20, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shake your groove thing at the Audubon Center on Thursday and get into shape. This new total-body workout class “uses easy-to-follow dance steps to increase cardiovascular fitness and tone the body.”
How much: Free.
