Spinster: Making a Life of One’s Own, by Kate Bolick

Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from writers and trombones, to crafts and trivia, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

BOOKISH: Writers Talking
When: Tuesday, May 26, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join Kensington novelist Amy Shearn as she hosts a brand new interview series at the Park Slope Library. This week, Spinster: Making A Life of One’s Own author, Kate Bolick, will discuss “the joys and discomforts of unmarried life, the underrated pleasures of solitude, the legacies of her literary ‘awakeners’ like Edna St Vincent Millay and Edith Wharton, and one of the central questions of her book: ‘Are women people yet?'”
How much: Free.

Beachface
When: Tuesday, May 26, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Trombonist Tim Vaughn brings together his talented quartet for a night of “high energy groove-based tunes with an emphasis on improvisation” at Barbes on Tuesday.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, May 27, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Toddler Time
When: Wednesday, May 27, 11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: After Rock With Adam wraps up, tots ages 18-36 months are invited to explore toys, watch finger plays, and listen to stories and songs at Toddler Time.
How much: Free, but tickets are required. Arrive by 11am to secure your spot.

Kids Create
When: Wednesday, May 27, 4:15-5pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: The library is hopping on Wednesday. After the kids return home from school, head over to our local branch for crafts, stories, and other fun activities. Note that the program is geared toward children six and up, but younger kids are welcome with an adult.
How much: Free.

Dollars To Degrees: Funding Your Child’s Education
When: Thursday, May 28, 6-7:30
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: We all know college is expensive (really expensive), but financial planner and wealth advisor, Mina Black’s, Thursday workshop should help ease some of your anxiety. Black will discuss “ways to pay for college using saving plans, financial aid, work study, and loans as well as the differences and advantages between different college savings vehicles.”
How much: Free.

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, May 28, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Slap on that thinking cap and tackle a few rounds of trivia over at Supercollider. Big prizes and bragging rights await the winner.
How much: No cover.
