South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: July 6-8

Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from superheroes and ragtime, to album release parties and free workouts, folks in the Slope won’t have to go far for summertime entertainment. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

Zumba
When: Monday, July 6, 5pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Kick off a new fitness regimen at the Park Slope Library every Monday, as the branch hosts an energetic Zumba class for the community.
How much: Free.

Ragtime And Bluez Jam
When: Tuesday, July 7, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Miss Ida Blue hosts a brand new “sleazy greasy love jam” at Freddy’s on Tuesday night. In addition to Miss Ida, look for Dan Block on reeds, Brian Nalepka on tuba/bass, and Conal Fowkes on piano.
How much: $10 suggested donation.

Story Play
When: Wednesday, July 8, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring the family out to the library on Monday morning for stories, games, and fun with friends. Geared toward children ages birth to 3 years.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), be sure to arrive early.

Superhero Training Lab: Mask Making With Mark Ziemann
When: Wednesday, July 8, 3-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s your kid’s very own superhero! Led by artist Mark Ziemann, Wednesday’s Park Slope Library craft hour has kids (ages 6 and up) designing the costumes and gear for their personal superhero creations.
How much: Free, but limited to 20 participants, so get there early to guarantee a spot.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, July 8, 6-7pm
Where: Prospect Park, Audubon Center
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.

Laila And Smitty
When: Wednesday, July 8, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Celebrate the release of trumpeter/improviser Kenny Warren’s second album as a songwriter with the band Laila and Smitty.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
