South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: January 19-22
Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from boogaloo and trivia, to karaoke and kiddie rock, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:
Tropical Vortex Monday
When: Monday, January 19, 9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Counteract the January chill with tropical rhythms at Barbes. This week, it’s all about “reviving and renewing boogaloo, the sound that sprang from the street of 1960s Spanish Harlem,” as Spanglish Fly takes the stage.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Ice has officially taken over the rink in Prospect Park, but Toddler Tuesdays are still going strong every week at Lakeside. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included. Ice skating grippers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for caregivers not comfortable on the ice.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).
Trivia Night
When: Tuesday, January 20, 8pm
Where: Johnny Mack’s, 1114 8th Avenue
What: If you’ve got some trivial knowledge just taking up room in your brain, let it out here for the possibility of free shots and prizes!
How much: Free.
Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, January 21, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.
Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, January 21, 6-7pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.
Humans Against Music Karaoke
When: Wednesday, January 21, 9pm-12:30am
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Sing your heart out and possibly walk away with some snazzy prizes at Freddy’s monthly karaoke night.
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Dance Fitness
When: Thursday, January 22, 11am-12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shake your groove thing at the Audubon Center on Thursday and get into shape. This new total-body workout class “uses easy-to-follow dance steps to increase cardiovascular fitness and tone the body.”
How much: Free.
