South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: February 23-26

Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from open mic comedy and silent films, to folk music and South African masks, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:

Dirty Hoe Monday Open Mic Night
When: Monday, February 23, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Looking for a fantastic spot to test out your new material? Make your way to Freddy’s for their weekly open mic comedy night. Register early by emailing dirtyhoecomedy@gmail.com. Walk-ins are also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 6pm, and the first comic hits the stage at 6:30pm.
How much: No cover, but comics must purchase at least one item from the bar for a 7-minute set.

Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Ice has officially taken over the rink in Prospect Park, but Toddler Tuesdays are still going strong every week at Lakeside. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included. Ice skating grippers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for caregivers not comfortable on the ice.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).

The Art Of Living Meditation Workshop
When: Tuesday, February 24, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Stress and life in the big city often go hand in hand, but the Park Slope Library is at the ready with a meditation workshop, led by volunteer organization The Art of Living. Note that this class is for adults only. No reservation is required.
How much: Free.

Silent Film Tuesday
When: Tuesday, February 25, 9pm
Where: Sea Witch, 703 5th Avenue, between 21st and 22nd Streets
What: Travel back to the time before the talkies every Tuesday at Sea Witch. This week’s film is the Ukrainian silent drama, Earth, from director Alexander Dovzhenko.
How much: Free.

Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, February 25, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Folk Sing-A-Long With Katy Stone
When: Wednesday, February 25, 11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: After Rock With Adam wraps up, the library is getting folksy with Katy Stone. Geared toward children through age 5. As with the above performance, note that tickets are required, so be sure to arrive to the library early and secure your spot.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, February 25, 6-7pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.

Free Rad Jokez
When: Wednesday, February 25, 8:30pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Dustin Sherman hosts the fun, free night of comedy featuring Owen Straw, Matt Koff, Ashley Gavin, Lawson Leong, Brian Baron, and Kevin Froleiks.
How much: Free.

Celebrate Black History Month: South African Storytelling And Mask Making
When: Thursday, February 26, 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Bring your elementary school kiddos to the library on Thursday afternoon for a performance of King Lion’s Gifts, Nelson Mandela’s favorite story. Afterward, the group will make masks of the South African animals presented in the tale.
How much: Free.
