South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: December 22-24
Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from ice skating and giant menorahs, to a Chanukah vs Christmas showdown and free beer, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Wednesday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:
Libra Holiday Pop-Up Shop
When: December 22-23, 10:30am-7:30pm
Where: Hootenanny Art House, 428 15th Street at 8th Avenue
What: Get your last minute holiday shopping in at Hootenanny Art House this week as Libra (formerly Sweet Charity) hosts a seasonal pop-up store. Shoppers can look for sales up to 40% off, including 10% off your whole purchase, and an additional 30% off ornaments, holiday stationery, and Sweet Charity overstock sale items like clothing, kid’s gifts, and jewelry.

Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah Lighting
When: Through December 23, 6pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Hanukkah is in full swing, so be sure to head over to Grand Army Plaza for the giant menorah lighting. December 16-18, the lighting will take place at 6pm, December 19 at 3:30pm, December 20 at 7pm, and December 21-23 at 6pm. In addition to the menorah, there will be live music, dreidels, doughnuts, latkes, and prizes for the kids.

Fuller’s ESB Tasting
When: December 22, 8pm
Where: The Monro Pub, 481 5th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: Start the week of Christmas off right with free beer at The Monro. The gang from Fuller’s will be on hand with samples of their brew at 8pm.
How much: Free.
Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Ice has officially taken over the rink in Prospect Park, but Toddler Tuesdays are still going strong every week at Lakeside. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included. Ice skating grippers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for caregivers not comfortable on the ice.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).
Christmas Vs. Chanukah Party
When: Tuesday, December 23, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: “This holiday season, candles won’t be the only things getting lit,” says the post for Freddy’s gigantic holiday celebration, starting at 8pm on Tuesday, and rocking Fifth Avenue all night long. Shmaltz and Smuttynose Brewing companies will be on hand, and guests are invited to have their picture taken with Dirty Santa!

Christmas Eve With The Mandingo Ambassadors
When: Wednesday, December 24, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: The West African grooves from the Mandingo Ambassadors are a weekly staple at Barbes, and they’re not taking a break for the holidays, so stop by, have a drink, and enjoy some tunes.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
