South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: December 15-18
Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from ice skating and giant menorahs, to live music and comedy, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:
Dirty Hoe Monday Open Mic Night
When: Monday, December 15, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Looking for a fantastic spot to test out your new material? Make your way to Freddy’s for their weekly open mic comedy night. Register early by emailing dirtyhoecomedy@gmail.com. Walk-ins are also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 6pm, and the first comic hits the stage at 6:30pm.
How much: No cover, but comics must purchase at least one item from the bar for a 7-minute set.
Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Ice has officially taken over the rink in Prospect Park, but Toddler Tuesdays are still going strong every week at Lakeside. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included. Ice skating grippers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for caregivers not comfortable on the ice.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).
Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah Lighting
When: Tuesday, December 16, 6pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Hanukkah starts this week, so be sure to head over to Grand Army Plaza for the giant menorah lighting. December 16-18, the lighting will take place at 6pm, December 19 at 3:30pm, December 20 at 7pm, and December 21-23 at 6pm. In addition to the menorah, there will be live music, dreidels, doughnuts, latkes, and prizes for the kids.
How much: Free.
Kings Bay Y Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, December 17, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes. Recommended for children ages 0-5.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.
Rob Reich Quintet
When: Wednesday, December 17, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Join Oakland-based accordionist/pianist/composer Rob Reich for an evening of his original music, which Barbes says “finds inspiration in bebop, pop, traditional jazz, and circus music.”
How much: $10 (stongly) suggested donation.
Shape Up NYC: Dance Fitness
When: Thursday, December 18, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shake your groove thing at the Audubon Center on Thursday and get into shape. This new total-body workout class “uses easy-to-follow dance steps to increase cardiovascular fitness and tone the body.”
How much: Free.
