South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: August 18-21


Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from tween knitting circles to family fishing in Prospect Park, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Thursday.

Raphael McGregor
When: Monday, August 18, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Brain Cloud’s lap steel player Raphael McGregor and his quartet take the Barbes stage on Monday, playing some of his recent music.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Hit the Lakeside rink with the neighborhood’s youngest Slopers every Tuesday morning. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).

Tween Knitting Circle
When: Tuesday, August 19, 3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Whether they’re already a pro, or are interested in learning the basics, kids ages 8 and up are invited to the library on Tuesday for a knitting circle with instructor Maria McGrath. Participants can bring their own projects, or can use needle and yarn onsite.
How much: Free.

Karaoke
When: Wednesday, August 20, 9pm-12:30am
Where: Freddy’s

, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets


What: It’s the third Wednesday of the month, which means it’s time to belt out a tune and possibly win a prize for doing so. It’s lo-fi — so the lyrics are on actual paper — so don’t expect too much pressure, but do expect a good time.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Boot Camp
When: Thursday, August 21, 11am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Bring your workout mat up to the Audubon Center Thursday and annihilate those calories with a total body workout. The boot camp focuses on muscle strength and endurance.
How much: Free.

Free Carousel Rides
When: Every Thursday in August, 12-6pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Who doesn’t love a ride on the Prospect Park Carousel?! Every Thursday afternoon throughout the month of August, kids 12 and under are invited to hop on for free. Note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free.

Family Fishing Night
When: Thursday, August 14, 6:30-8:30pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Learn how to tie a fishing knot, attach bait, and cast a line in this catch-and-release fishing class in Prospect Park. Families and children over the age of eight are welcome to participate. All equipment is provided. Reservations are required. Reserve your spot by calling 718-287-3400 x303 or email eschwartz@prospectpark.org.
How much: $5 per person, cash only.
