South Slope Events Spotlight: December 19-22
From badass animals and Santa to sweet sounds at 78 RPM and poop (yes, poop), the Slope is getting festive this weekend. Check out some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:
Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue Benefit
When: Thursday, December 19 through Saturday, December 21
Where: Mary’s Bar, 708 5th Avenue at 22nd Street
What: You’ve still got until December 21 to drink for a good cause at Mary’s Bar! $2 from every pint of Smuttynose Porter sold will be donated to Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue, “a network of fosters and volunteers that work together to rescue sweet, loving, adoptable dogs from high kill, rural shelters in the southern states.”
How much: Free to get in, pints are $6.
Lakeside Opens
When: Friday, December 20, 11am
Where: Prospect Park
What: The moment has finally arrived. Prospect Park’s Lakeside officially opens to the public on Friday. Are your skates ready? Holiday hours through January 1 are: Monday through Thursday, 10am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday, 9am to 10pm, and Sundays, 9am to 8pm.
How Much: Entry into the LeFrak Center, the cafe, and the restrooms is free. Skating is $6/person weekdays, $8/person weekends and holidays, and there is free admission (for children 12 and under) on Mondays from 3pm to 6pm (excluding holidays). Skate Rental is $5.
Festive Fifth And Santa
When: Saturday, December 21, 3:30pm to 5pm
Where: Du Jour Bakery, 365 Fifth Avenue, between 5th and 6th Streets
What: You’ve got one more chance to see Santa on 5th Avenue before he heads back to the North Pole. He’ll be setting up shop at Du Jour Bakery in North Slope Saturday afternoon, so be sure to get those last minute Christmas wishes in!
How much: Free!
Artie Bennett Reads Poopendous
When: Sunday, December 22, 11:30am to 12pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: Come celebrate poop at Powerhouse on 8th Sunday, with acclaimed children’s author Artie Bennett and his book Poopendous. Powerhouse notes that “it’s a book that says: Don’t just flush this stuff away! While it may dismay and stink, there’s more to this stuff than you might think!”
How much: Free, but RSVP is requested. Email RSVP@POWERHOUSEon8th.com to reserve your spot.
78 RPM Sunday
When: Sunday, December 22, 4pm to 7pm
Where: Der Kom, 559 5th Avenue, between 15th and 16th Street
What: It’s going to be all things Kringle at Der Kom Sunday, so take a break from that last minute holiday shopping to join host Mark Strathy for a little Bing at 78 RPM. Party like it’s 1929, South Slope!
How much: Free!
