Sneak Peek: Wheated

Guys, the time has finally come! You already know Wheated (905 Church Ave. between Coney Island Ave. and E 10th St.) is officially opening at the beginning of July, with a few soft opening days before that. Now, owner David Sheridan lets us inside for a look behind the papered windows.

The inside of Wheated merges a sort of industrial feel with a warm, rustic one. The chandelier above and sconces on the walls lend modern edge, and patterns are mixed throughout the walls of the space, while doors reclaimed from a Rhode Island schoolhouse–that survived the flood Wheated’s original ovens did not–decorate a doorway and part of the ceiling.

Chrome fixtures and a library ladder from Build It Green add interest behind the bar. The mixed wood used for Wheated’s table tops was largely sourced from BIG, too.

The menu is still being finalized, but will feature a few appetizers alongside the pizza (though for the soft opening, food options will be a bit more limited). Six beers are set to be on tap, and those who lean towards cocktails will be able to get their preferred drinks as well.

Wheated’s backyard space my have a seating area at a later date, too. David was intentionally ambiguous about the exact date of the soft opening, but all we can say is keep your eyes peeled and your appetite on its toes.

David is still looking for staff with Food Handlers’ cards. If you’re interested, send your resume or work history and a brief explanation of why you’d like to work at Wheated to jobs@wheatedbrooklyn.com.

When we first spoke to David in September of last year, he said, “With Wheated, we are looking to offer a well-made drink, exceptional pizza, and comfortable surroundings. Easy to write—time will tell how well we do with this.”

Time–lots of time, way more than initially expected–will definitely tell. For now though, the establishment is looking incredible.

It’s been a long road for David and Kim. Congratulations on finally being thisclose to opening, and we can’t wait to try a slice when you do!
