Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: August 5-7

Weekend events are varied and intriguing. Shakespeare, a Hubble Cantata, music galore, and more!

Twelfth Night performed by South Brooklyn Shakespeare
When: Friday, August 5 – Saturday, August 6, 8pm
Where: Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street between 4th And 5th Avenues
What: Our very own classical theater company performs one of Shakespeare’s best plays. You can check our review of their excellent production, which debuted on July 23.
How much: Free. You can donate online throughout the year to help support the company.

Adoptapalooza
When: Saturday, August 6, 12pm-5pm
Where: Prospect Park West and 15th Street (Bartel-Pritchard Square.
What: The Alliance for NYC’s Animals is holding a mega pet-adoption event where over 150 dogs and cats from more than a dozen rescue organizations will be available to fall in love with. Bring the whole family for an afternoon of frolicking and fun with happy animals looking for a happy home. See our preview article here.

Concerts on the Slope Presents: Love and Strife
When: Saturday, August 6, 7:30pm
Where: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 St. John’s Place at 7th Avenue
What: Selections from “Old American Songs” (arr. Lippel), Aaron Copland Lute Suite No. 1 in e minor, BWV 996, Johann Sebastian Bach. This is always an excellent classical event.

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival: The Hubble Cantata / Tigue
When: Saturday, August 6. 7:30pm, Gates open at 6:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park (Enter at 9th Street and Prospect Park West)
What: Composer Paola Prestini and collaborators transport us through the cosmos with a powerful combination of music, science, and virtual reality.

Personal Is Political Is Personal
When: Through August 6. Thursdays and Fridays, 4:00-7:00pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00am-7:00pm. [closing weekend]
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: A national juried exhibition about the personal effects of politics, curated by celebrated artist and animal-rights activist Sue Coe. In this intensely political year we hear sound bites and promises that can seem abstract unless it affects us personally. Black Lives Matter. Gender Equality. Gun Control. It’s all just words until we see a child’s body washed ashore, a routine traffic stop becomes deadly, or a family home is destroyed at high tide. 440 Gallery’s theme show this year is centered on the personal effects of politics. Artists selected for the exhibition: Max Alper, Hannah Barnhardt, Lynn Benson, Eva M. εὖτόπος, (Eutopia), a site-responsive installation by the Vanderbilt Republic
When: Through Sunday, September 11. Wednesdays-Sundays, 10am-5pm.
Where: Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island.
What: This large-scale, site-responsive exhibition connects artwork and installations by Sabrina Barrios, Sarah E. Brook, Charles Heppner, Carlton Scott Sturgill,TAXIPLASM, TJ Volonis, and Dale Williams to the storied past and bucolic present of Staten Island’s historic Snug Harbor — creating a space to present the energy and form of dreams made real. PS 321 Flea Market
When: Saturdays and Sundays, 9am-5pm
Where: 180 7th Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets – in front of PS 321
What: This market is considered a Park Slope institution by many, and plans to be open year round. The flea is under new management this year.

Smorgasburg at Prospect Park
When: Sundays, 11am-6pm
Where: Prospect Park, Breeze Hill (Located near Lakeside and the Lincoln Road entrance)
What: Smorgasburg begins its warm weather months in our beautiful backyard. Find 100 vendors and food from all over the world every Sunday at Breeze Hill, located near Lakeside and the park’s Lincoln Road entrance.  Find the market on Google Maps here. Space Captain and Friends
When: Sunday, August 7, 8pm-11pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues.
What:  Space Captain is a Brooklyn based psych-soul band signed to Brighton’s Tru Thoughts and includes members Maralisa Simmons-Cook (vocalist/lyricist), Alex Pyle (bass and production), Gray Hall (guitar and production), Mike Haldeman (guitar), Joey Ziegler (drums), Joy Morales (keyboard) and Lessie Vonner (trumpet). The group has appeared with BADBADNOTGOOD, Ghostface Killah, J. Viewz, Dresses, Chris Turner, and more. Lauren Laverne of BBC Radio 6 Music calls them “really interesting…a sound of their own.”
