Updated: Early Morning Fire At 2126 Nostrand Avenue, Near Flatbush Avenue, Leaves One Man Dead, Five Others Injured: FDNY

Updated 3:10pm: Tony Celestin, the 68-year-old neighbor who jumped from a third-floor window to escape a fire at 2126 Nostrand Avenue, by Flatbush Avenue, early this morning has died from his injuries, the FDNY said Monday afternoon.

According to the Daily News, Celestin was a Haitian immigrant and father of three. After leaping from the window to a mattress that bystanders had placed on the ground to help him get away from the burning building, he was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital but could not be saved, officials and the News said.

Another individual, Jean Maurice, 56, also jumped from the window, and Maurice landed on the awning of the next door Golden Krust bakery, he told the News. He was treated and released from the Staten Island University Hospital today.

Original post: We received terrible news this morning: six people were injured in a fire that broke out on the top floor of 2126 Nostrand Avenue, a three-story building by Flatbush Avenue, at 1:48am Monday morning, the FDNY said.

One person is being treated for life-threatening injuries at Staten Island University Hospital, the FDNY said. Others are being treated for injuries at Kings County Hospital, officials said. It was unclear if more than one person had been taken to Staten Island University Hospital, and the FDNY did not say why they were not taken to a closer facility.

Neighbors described a terrifying scene on Nostrand, with witnesses telling News 12 that two people “were forced to jump from the burning building to escape.” One person jumped from the building that houses the Get Set Exclusive clothing shop on the first floor to the Golden Krust bakery next door, while another individual landed on a mattress.

CBS New York reported:

One man was seriously hurt when he jumped to the ledge of the next door bakery. The second man was critically injured after he landed on a mattress bystanders took out of the garbage and placed on the sidewalk.

The flames brought under control by 2:16am, and the fire remains under investigation, the FDNY said.
