Show Off Your Best Apple Pie At The Windsor Terrace Greenmarket This Sunday, October 19
Think you’ve got the right ingredients to claim victory in the best kind of competition there is – one that includes mouth-watering baked goods?
This Sunday, October 19, the Windsor Terrace Greenmarket (11th Avenue, between Sherman and Windsor Place) will hold its apple pie bake-off from 10am to 2pm. If you think you have a homemade pie recipe worthy of fame, you can bring your pie to the market, where it’ll be judged by fellow market goers. The first place winner will receive a market bag of produce and other goodies. Gabby Stern, the greenmarket’s manager stressed that you should use your imagination with your pie, but you must use local apples.
If you don’t bake, don’t worry – you can go by the information tent to taste the pies and cast your vote for the best one. If you have more questions about the pie bake-off, email Gabby at gstern@grownyc.org for more information.
The apple pie contest isn’t the only thing happening at the Windsor Terrace Greenmarket – the following week, on October 26, there will be a Halloween Fall Harvest Portrait Day from 10am to 3pm. So, bring yourself, your kids, and your pets in festive costume and get your portrait taken among the fall harvest. They’ll be posting all photos to Facebook so make sure to check out the album here.
Plus, of course, there’s all the new autumn produce coming into the market – and Gabby sent us a fall squash recipe! So, if you’re not sure how to cook with winter squash, Gabby tells us this recipe below is a quick, delicious and easy way to sweeten up the fall:
Simple Roasted Butternut Squash
3 lb butternut squash, peeled, seeded & cut into 1″ pieces
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. On a baking sheet, toss the butternut squash with the olive oil, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and a little freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 25-30 minutes, just until tender. The squash can be placed over a bed of spicy arugula or mustard greens.
- Don’t compost the seeds! You can bake butternut squash seeds too. Bake at the same temp for 12-15 minutes. Occasionally tossing the pan.
