Should ‘Black Americana’ Items Be Sold At Brooklyn Flea At PS 321?
This past weekend marked the first of Brooklyn Flea’s management of the market at PS 321. Did you stop by? South Slope neighbor Avi did, and he tells us he spotted some items for sale that he wasn’t particularly comfortable seeing:
I walked by on Saturday, and one of the vendors was selling a collection of metal figurines that included a significant number of “Black Americana” items, racist caricature figures commonly sold in the first half of the 20th Century. The items included a Black phrenology skull, a “Jolly N****r Bank,” several “Aunt Jemima” figures, and others.
The vendor shrugged off my questions/concerns, and said that the items sell very well.
While items like this are considered collectibles by some, and can be found by the thousands on eBay, is it insensitive to sell them, and would it impact your support of the market?
