She’s On the Ballot

State senatorial candidate, Julia Salazar, emerged victorious in today’s court battle seeking to throw her off the ballot.

Twice, the long-term State Sen. Martin Malavé Dilan of the 18th senatorial district has brought the self-proclaimed progressive candidate in front of a judge alleging Salazar doesn’t meet the five-year residency requirement to run for a New York state senator.

A judge denied his claim, again.

“Today’s unanimous decision once again shows that Senator Dilan’s arguments concerning her residency are baseless,” said Renée Paradis, Salazar’s attorney.  “Senator Dilan simply has no case, and his decision to try a hail-mary appeal to Albany just shows how desperate he is to avoid facing Brooklyn’s voters this September.”

Campaign spokesperson Michael Kinnucan said Salazar was able to prove she moved to the state from Florida in 2009 and furnished, to the judge, rent receipts that indicate she’s lived in Brooklyn for the five required years.

Bklyner reached out to the Senator’s Albany and Brooklyn office with no response.

Mayor de Blasio quietly endorsed Dilan over the more progressive candidate despite backing some of her blue-wave cohorts.  During his weekly appearance on NY1 , Errol Louis asked the mayor what prompted his decision to back the incumbent who has served nearly three decades between New York City’s council and senatorial districts throughout East New York and Bushwick.

“It’s very personal.”

De Blasio noted his relationship with both Dilan and his son Erik Martin Dilán.

“When they asked for my support I knew what I was getting,” he said acknowledging he’s heard good things about Dilan’s opponent Salazar.
