Serve Your Neighborhood as a Member of Community Board 14
If you’re an active member of the community already, why not get more involved by joining Community Board 14? Applications are currently being accepted, and the deadline is February 28.
Community Boards serve as advocates and service coordinators for the neighborhood and its residents, and they have an important advisory role in dealing with land use and zoning matters, the city budget, municipal service delivery, and many other matters relating to their community’s welfare.
There is a general board meeting one evening a month, and various committee meetings where most of the planning and work is done on the issues that are discussed at the board meeting.
Applicants must be residents of NYC, and you must live, work in, or have a professional or other significant interest in the district that CB14 covers. These are unsalaried positions.
We can only say from our own limited experience with a few Brooklyn Community Boards, but we’ve got a pretty great one with CB14. They’ve always been very responsive to neighborhood concerns, whether our own or ones on behalf of you guys, and though yes, meetings can occasionally go on a bit long, they are always informative, helpful, and often kind of fun.
If you’re interested in seeing how it works before applying, there will be another general board meeting on Monday, February 11, before the application deadline.
