September Speeding Ticket Void In The 78th Precinct

In the month of September, the 78th Precinct issued no speeding tickets to drivers, according to the Daily News, which adds that the neighboring 77th Precinct, which covers Prospect Heights and Crown Heights, handed out 77 tickets for speeding.

They note that Amy Cohen, mother of Sammy Cohen-Eckstein, who was hit and killed by a van (which was reportedly not speeding) on Prospect Park West last month, will be testifying at a hearing that is going on today at City Council. Councilmember David Greenfield has co-sponsored a bill that would lower the speed limit to 20 miles per hour on “all streets fewer than sixty feet wide in areas zoned for residential purposes” in New York City. Streetsblog takes a look at what that might mean for the city.

Other recent traffic calming efforts in the neighborhood include a push to get a red light camera on PPW, and bringing a number of changes to 4th Avenue. Clearly that’s working if nobody’s speeding, right?

Though the 78th didn’t issue any speeding tickets last month, it did give out 604 summons for moving violations — including 123 for failure to stop at a signal, and 136 for drivers using their cell phones.

The 72nd Precinct issued 463 tickets in September for moving violations, including 10 for speeding, 36 for failure to stop at a signal, and 54 for drivers using their cell phones.

So, do you think drivers are actually slowing down in the Slope? Or do we still have a long way to go toward safer streets (and adequate enforcement of speed limits)?
