A Major League Baseball All-Star’s tribute to his brother is a chance for you to get serious about your health, for free.

The second annual Fred L. Mazzilli Lung Cancer Screening Awareness Day is taking place on Thursday, November 6 from 11am to 3pm in New York Methodist Hospital‘s Carrington Pavilion Atrium, located at 506 6th Street. It’s a component of Methodist’s Mazzilli Free Lung Cancer Screening Program, which was established in partnership with the family of Brooklyn native and former baseball star Lee Mazzilli, whose brother, Fred, died of lung cancer in 2012.

The will be free health screenings — spirometry (lung function), blood pressure, blood sugar — plus an educational lecture (at noon) and giveaways. Methodist pulmonologists and respiratory therapists will be available to answer questions.

Additionally, some of those in attendance may be eligible to make an appointment for a free low-dose CT scan and evaluation, which is recommended for current or former smokers aged 55 to 74 years who have a long moderate-heavy smoking history and have not previously been diagnosed with lung cancer.

The event is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is recommended by calling 718-780-5367.
