Salud’s Mexican Hot Chocolate Is Amazing

We’ve mentioned it in passing before, but with the impending snowy forecast, it seems like a good time to talk about Salud’s Mexican hot chocolate. Rich and frothy, Mexican hot chocolate differs from other versions of the drink by, among other things, incorporating a touch of spices. Salud’s original mix includes organic cacao beans blended with canela bark, allspice, and nutmeg, and it’s basically dessert in a cup.

They offer four kinds of Mexican hot chocolate, $4 for a small, $5 for a large: the original, a spicy one with chiles, one with a hint of coconut, and one with mint. We’ve only ventured away from the fantastic original version once, to try the chile hot chocolate, and it was also pretty great — still sweet and rich, with enough kick to make it interesting, but not too much to lose the chocolate flavor.

And if you want to make it at home, they sell packages of mix for $10. It’s up to you whether you make it with a whisk or a traditional molinillo.

Salud is located at 1308 Avenue H, near Argyle Road. They’ll be open today until about 7-8pm, and will play it by ear tomorrow depending on the snow. Call 347-295-1191 to check if they’re open before you head over.
