Rookie Corrections Officer “Executed” In Her Car In Georgetown
In a drive-by style shooting, a New York City Corrections officer was shot to death while sitting in her car on Avenue L and East 73 Street on Sunday night, according to police.
Alastasia Bryan, 25, was off duty when she was killed less than two blocks from the Georgetown Shopping Center at about 9:15pm, police said, approximately 4 miles from her home in East New York.
Bryan had recently started a new job at the Anna M. Kross Center on Rikers Island as a corrections officer, according to a report by the Daily News. She was a recent graduate of the city Correction Academy.
“Apparently the victim knew the perpetrator, and it was not, repeat not a random street crime or robbery at all,” wrote the Bergen Beach Civic Association on their Facebook page.
The Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Elias Husamedeen said the union wouldn’t rest until the assailant was caught and would do anything it can for Bryan’s family.
“Tonight our correction family and the entire city of New York is shocked and grieving the horrific murder of one of the youngest members of New York City’s Boldest, who was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while sitting in her car in Brooklyn,” said Husamudeen. “There are no words that can express the depth of this tragedy.”
That quiet corner of Brooklyn isn’t used to such jarring examples of crime. The News reported that onlookers at the scene were so overcome with grief that one woman needed a chair to sit down.
The Georgetown Civic Association is holding a vigil tonight at 7pm on the intersection of 73rd and Avenue L, according to their Facebook page.
“Community Advocate Tony Herbert along with Community Leaders, Law Enforcement Groups, Clergy leaders elected officials, and Residents hold a Candle Light Prayer Vigil for the Correction Officer killed, and will pray for the Safety of all LEOs as well as to denounce gun violence!!” exclaimed the GCA Facebook post.
