Rep. Maloney Seeks Impeachment of President Trump
WILLIAMSBURG/GREENPOINT – Rep. Carolyn Maloney is no stranger to President Donald Trump, having been his representative in Congress when he lived at Trump Tower and occasionally bumping into him at receptions in her district. Rep. Maloney didn’t, however, mince words about the President in her speech at a rally in Foley Square on Saturday where she and her supporters are calling for his impeachment.
Hundreds of supporters rallied to her side, also seeking Trump’s ouster based on information provided by the Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other information that Congress is currently culling.
There were also a handful of counter-protestors in support of Trump, one in particular from the east side portion of her district waving a LGBTQ flag in support of the President and at one point, photobombing the congresswoman while lifting her shirt up to her neck to expose her breasts while doing so. Police nearby kept a watch on Julia Germanatto a resident of the upper east side, but didn’t interfere with the young woman who was trying to get attention to her views that were in favor of President Trump. However, she did put her shirt back on.
A handful of other Trump supporters stood at the rally with their own protest signs, but were shouted down by those in favor of impeaching the president. Rep. Maloney, who’s Brooklyn districts include Williamsburg and Greenpoint, stood firm on her stand to seek the impeachment of President Trump.
“President Trump said he would accept information and dirty from a foreign country and that is clearly illegal,” Maloney said. “We are all required to report to the FBI influencing activities by foreign governments – I found it deeply troubling. There are six different investigations and not one of us are able to get our hands on a single piece of paper – there is oversight separation of powers and they have not cooperated – not one document delivered. They have refused and used executive privilege and sued to stop us from getting these documents. Congress is supposed to be a balance of power and the President destroys that.”
Rep. Maloney recognized the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not support impeachment at this time. Despite that position, Rep. Maloney maintained her views.
“One thing is Nancy Pelosi is very good at is she is in one of the most difficult jobs – with so many different views and agendas and regions of the country and maybe she doesn’t have the support of all the caucuses for impeachment. I can make my own decisions. Everyone will make their own decisions and I am supporting impeachment.”
Former Brooklyn DA and congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman spoke at the rally and she said she remembered her days on the House judiciary committee in where they voted on articles of impeachment President Richard Nixon during Watergate.
“I know what the law is, and what the constitution is and what works because I was there,” Holtzman said. “The Bible says, and don’t often quote, but there is a time for everything, and time to be born, and time to die, time to laugh, time to mourn now it’s time to start impeachment inquiry of President Trump,” Holtzman said.
Shannon Hickey of Bay Ridge stood with other impeachment supporters and said he believes President Trump is a “bad man.”
“I want to defeat Trump because he is a bad person,” said Hickey. “ He’s done a lot of criminal stuff, he wants to throw Mexicans out and we have to stop him from doing the wrong things.”
Robert Ayers from Park Slope, who immigrated from Great Britain and became a U.S. citizen two years ago, said he is “ashamed of the current government.”
“I believe in democracy, and Trump is the only president we ever had who endangers the future of this country,” Ayers said. “He has worked with a foreign government to undermine the process of our election. On other things, he is racists, sexist, queer-basher, and ‘black lives’ mean nothing for him. I am ashamed to call myself an American with him in office.”
Trump supporter Germanatto harranged Maloney throughout the rally with a handful of other protestors in support of Trump. “I live in her district and I am not going away and Trump will win again,” Germanatto said.
