Renovation Underway On For-Rent Church Ave Commercial Spaces

Several storefronts along Church Avenue between East 5th Street and Ocean Parkway are being renovated, including the spaces where El Gavilan and Old Brick Cafe used to be, and the owner is currently looking for businesses that might be interested in becoming the new tenants.

This stretch of Church Avenue has several openings at the moment — just a block down, there are two other vacancies. When asked, most of those who responded to our poll said they’d like to see something other than a grocery, clothing, or shoe store, but nobody left a comment about what exactly they’d rather see. We’re guessing restaurant?

Neighbor Liam McCarthy sent us these photos of the spaces between E 5th and Ocean Pkwy.

Windows are papered over, but you can peek in and see a bit of the work that’s going on inside.

With new spaces opening up in the past year or so on Church Avenue to the east of Coney Island Avenue (Am Thai and Lark), and more still to open in that area in the coming months (Wheated, Fat Beagle, Anarkali), these vacancies seem like a great opportunity for any businesses looking to jump onto that Church Avenue action. Can the success of new businesses on the other side of CIA spread to this side of Church? We think so, and we’re looking forward to the possibilities.
