Red Admiral Butterfly

Red Admiral Butterfly by carryboo, on Flickr.

I have been chasing these winged beasts all over the neighborhood this week trying to take a photo, but even though there are so many of them around right now, they don’t like to sit still. Finally got one!

As Gothamist noted earlier this week, we’re seeing a lot of them flying around because of our mild winter, and they suggested ways to get them settled in our area: “The butterflies will lay their eggs now, and some ways New Yorkers with gardens can keep them around is by planting stinging nettles and hops, which the caterpillars can munch on.”

Have you seen something interesting in the neighborhood recently? Send photos to ditmasparkcorner@gmail.com or add them to the Ditmas Park Corner Flickr group, and we’ll post them on the blog.
