Expected PS/IS 338K Completion Pushed Back To 2017 & Other Updates On Local Schools

The expected date of completion for PS/IS 338K (to be built at 510 Coney Island Avenue between Turner and Hinckley Places) is now 2017, the School Construction Authority told Community Board 14‘s Education, Libraries, and Cultural Affairs Committee at their most recent meeting.

The bidding process is currently underway for the school, said an ELC Committee representative at last week’s CB14 meeting, though construction was initially slated to begin as early as last summer, with the school’s opening as early as winter of 2016.

Work on the school, which necessitates demolition of buildings currently on the property, will include building 34 classrooms over five floors for kids in Pre-K to 8th grade, plus research labs, a “gymnatorium,” and a separate exclusive gym space. There will be two principals and 757 seats available. Buses will load on Hinckley Place.

The SCA also told the ELC Committee that renovations at PS 139 should wrap up in December, and that repairs will take place to address leaks and flooding at PS 217 shortly.
