Prospect Gardens Pharmacy To Close, Possibly Be Replaced By National Chain

Another prominent storefront is about to open up on 7th Avenue, adding to a long list of vacancies on the strip — though the new owner seems to have plans for the space already.

Prospect Gardens Pharmacy, located at 89 7th Avenue, plans to close following the sale of its building, reports the Daily News. The space at 857-861 Union Street, on the corner of 7th Ave, which has two retail spaces (a law office is the other, on Union) and 12 residential units, just sold for the record price of $8.63 million, the highest price ever paid for a mixed-use building in the neighborhood.

Records show the buyer as development company Tisoped Corp, which this year has also purchased properties in Boston and Miami, and the Daily News says we should expect “a big national retail tenant” to take over the space. Which may be the only places that can afford to rent real estate on the street at this point, where asking prices are currently as high as $14,000 per month.

And of course this comes as sad news to those who’ve relied on this local pharmacy for decades. Prospect Gardens has been on this corner since the 1940s, and has been a local favorite of longtime residents and newcomers alike.

“A lot of the old timers aren’t around anymore, but when younger folks come in they’re always impressed by the fact that we actually care about them,” pharmacist Wayne Lippman told Here’s Park Slope a few years ago.

With this and the closure this weekend of Tea Lounge, the intersection of 7th and Union is about to look a lot different. Here’s hoping the spaces don’t stay empty for too long, at least.
