Private Picassos To Launch Pop-Up Art Studio On 5th Avenue

Another temporary venture is coming a vacant storefront on 5th Avenue, as Private Picassos, a mobile art studio for families, will take over 318 5th Ave for a month.

The business will set up in the Alta Voce restaurant space on 5th between 2nd and 3rd Streets (which has been up for rent for a few months), from October 15 through November 14. Families will be able to “get messy and make art collaboratively with their kids” while creating papier-mâché sculptures, trying a larger than life painting palette, or making stuffed animals.

Even though it’s just a month — though founder Valeen Bhat tells us she’d love to find a permanent home in Park Slope — there will be weekly classes for kids ages 1.5-2 years old, special events, adult studio hours, plus DIY art activities that do not require pre-registration.

They’ll be open Sunday-Saturday 9am-6pm and Wednesday 9am-9pm.

This is the second storefront on 5th Avenue that we’ve learned recently will host a pop-up business. A couple blocks away, Jackets and Jeans Sample Sale will be selling clothes for the next three months in a space that’s been vacant since March.

What do you think of these pop-ups — is it a great use of empty spaces, or would you rather see something come in and stay a while?
