Police Report An Increase In Robberies In The Area

Watch out for your stuff! There have been a number of robberies in the area recently including several involving weapons. Compared with last year, robberies in the 78th Police Precinct are up 15.9 percent.

Early Sunday morning a 43-year-old woman was hit in the head with a gun during an attempted robbery, NYPD said.

The victim was parking her car on 10th Street near Seventh Avenue at about 3am when another car passing her stopped. Two men jumped out of the car and demanded money from the woman. One of the men jammed the muzzle of a silver handgun against the victim’s mouth, an NYPD spokeswoman told DNAinfo.

The woman fell on top of her purse. One of the men then hit her on the head repeatedly with his gun. The robbers fled in their car without taking any valuables.

Later that night armed robbers struck about a mile and a half away in Gowanus. In the second incident, two women were walking on Degraw Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues around 3am when three men in a sedan pulled up next to them. The men were armed with two silver semi-automatic pistols and demanded that the women hand over their valuables. The women gave the men their bags and the robbers fled in their car toward 3rd Avenue, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

On Tuesday evening, a teen was stabbed in an attempted robbery on 3rd Avenue, police said. The teen fended off the would-be robber near 3rd Avenue and 16th Street about 8:40pm, an NYPD spokesman told DNAinfo.

He was stabbed in the torso in the scuffle and treated at Methodist Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

There have also been a number of bikes stolen from Prospect Park, from the street, and even from the entrances of buildings.

If you’d like to hear more from the police about these incidents and the status of crime in the neighborhood, the 78th Precinct Community Council meets on Tuesday, June 30, at 7:30pm at the 78th Precinct on 6th Avenue near Bergen Street.
