Police Release Photo Of Man Shot By 70th Precinct Sergeant After Suspect Allegedly Pulled Knife On Him

Police have released the photo of the man who they said was shot by an undercover 70th Precinct sergeant after he allegedly pulled a knife on him when the policeman confronted him for being involved in stripping a car on E. 19th Street, near Glenwood Road, early Friday morning.

The NYPD said they’re looking for Arthur Whaley, who police described as being a 25-year-old man who is black, stands at about 5-feet-8-inches and weighs 150 pounds. He has tattoos on his arms and a possible gunshot wound to his arm, police said.

On Saturday, police said they arrested Corey Prescod, 26, of E. 37th Street, between Foster Avenue and Avenue D, and charged him with being involved with the same car stripping incident. Police said Prescod was allegedly working with Whaley to retrieve car parts two other men stripped from a Honda Fit around 4am Friday morning. Prescod was the passenger in the car being driven by Whaley as the two allegedly attempted to flee the scene of the crime after being confronted by the 70th Precinct sergeant.

After trying to drive away, Whaley struck an unoccupied, parked car on E. 19th Street, police said. When the sergeant pulled up next to the suspects’ vehicle, Whaley exited the car and allegedly disregarded “multiple orders given by the sergeant to remain inside the auto,” the NYPD said.

Once Whaley was outside the car, he allegedly “menaced the sergeant with a knife,” according to police.

“The sergeant gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop the knife, all of which were disregarded,” the NYPD said. “The sergeant discharged one round from his service weapon, striking the suspect about the body. The suspect then fled the location and remains unapprehended.”

At that time, Prescod was taken into custody. He has been charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, and auto stripping, police said.
