Playtime In Park Slope: Upcoming Children’s Events

Looking for some fun things to do with the whole family this week? From a storytime series starting up again in a local cafe to a Harvest Festival in the park, there’s a lot of cool stuff coming up in the neighborhood. Details on those and more kid-friendly events:

Babies & Books
When: Wednesday, September 24, 10am & 10:30am
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Kids ages birth to 18 months and their guardians can enjoy stories, songs, and rhymes.
How much: Free, but you must pick up a ticket the morning of the program at the Children’s reference desk.

Kings Bay Y Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, September 24, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score yours.

Story Play
When: Wednesday, September 24, 1:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Bring the family out to the library on Wednesday afternoon for stories, games, and fun with friends. Geared toward children ages birth to 3 years.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so once again, be sure to arrive early.

Free Public Rowing
When: Thursday, September 25, 4-7pm
Where: Boat ramp on Well House Drive, Prospect Park
What: It’s your last chance this season to take the kids for a boat ride around the Prospect Park Lake! The Prospect Park Alliance and the Village Community Boathouse are teaming up to make rowing accessible to all on select dates this summer, so paddle on over.
How much: Free!

Ezra Jack Keats Bedtime Stories
When: Thursday, September 26, 7pm
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Librarians will read a book aloud to children ages 3-7 and lead singing, rhyming, and playing activities related to the themes and images of the book. At the end of each session, every child is given a free copy of one of Keats’ books to keep.
How much: Free!

Storytime
When: Friday, September 26, 10am
Where: Postmark Cafe, 326 6th Avenue
What: A weekly storytime has returned to Postmark! Stop by every Friday for some free fun.
How much: Free, but there’s only space for 20 kids, so arrive early to ensure your spot.

Family Happy Hour With Mary Jo
When: Friday, September 26, 4:30pm
Where: Two Moon Art House & Cafe, 315 4th Avenue
What: MJ’s background in music, theater, and comedy fills this weekly toddler class full of stories, songs, instruments, and silly fun for the infant-to-five-year-old in all of us.
How much: $10 per family

Transforming Food: Hearth Cooking
When: Saturdays & Sundays in September, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Roll up your sleeves and explore cooking the old fashioned way. Families can look forward to making popcorn with fresh herb butter, apple pies on a rotating basis, churning butter, grinding corn, and pealing apples.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Art Workshop With Steve Keene
When: Saturday, September 27, 3pm
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Kids can collaborate with and learn from BPL’s artist-in-residence Steve Keene, a painter who you may have seen at work in front of the library throughout the summer. Appropriate for kids ages 8-14, and materials will be provided.
How much: Free!

Harvest Festival
When: Sunday, September 28, 1-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Celebrate this year’s harvest the same way Brooklynites did centuries ago by harvesting, cooking, and eating potatoes that were planted in the garden outside of the Lefferts Historic House back in May. And oh yes, there will be potato sack races!
How much: $3 suggested donation.
